Serpent & The Rainbow Tattoo and Pie.Zaa

46 Millard Avenue, Asheville, NC

Located in Asheville, North Carolina, the project at 46 Millard Avenue exemplifies our firm’s ability to manage and execute complex, multi-stakeholder commercial architecture projects from the ground up. This undertaking included the design of a new commercial shell building, as well as two separate tenant upfits: a vibrant restaurant space and a custom-designed tattoo studio.

As both shell and interior architects, we were uniquely positioned to guide the project from conceptual design through completion—ensuring architectural consistency, efficient workflows, and a high level of coordination across all phases. Working closely with two general contractors and three individual clients, our team balanced the needs of multiple businesses while maintaining a unified aesthetic and technical vision for the overall site.

The shell building was designed to offer flexible commercial space with clean lines, durable materials, and prominent street visibility—ideal for attracting foot traffic and supporting diverse tenants. Its layout and infrastructure were intentionally crafted to accommodate a variety of future uses while maintaining architectural character and performance.

For the restaurant tenant, we focused on flow, visibility, and creating a welcoming dining atmosphere that aligns with the brand’s identity. The design includes commercial kitchen space, code-compliant seating layouts, and a street-facing presence that draws in customers. The tattoo shop upfit emphasized privacy, lighting control, and hygienic materials, while still allowing for a bold, creative environment that reflects the client’s artistic vision.

Established tattoo parlor Serpent & the Rainbow Tattoo relocated from West Asheville to serve the South Slope area.

This project showcases our firm’s versatility in commercial architecture, from base building design to highly customized tenant interiors. By managing overlapping schedules, coordinating with multiple stakeholders, and maintaining high design standards throughout, we delivered a cohesive and functional destination that enhances the growing commercial landscape of Asheville.
