Our architecture firm was engaged by Asheville City Schools to manage and oversee a comprehensive roof repair and replacement project at the Asheville Middle School campus. This complex renovation addressed multiple roofing systems across a large educational facility, balancing preservation, replacement, and long-term performance to protect the integrity of this vital public school.
The scope of the project involved both the restoration of existing membrane roofing systems and traditional tear-off and replacement in targeted areas of the campus. Our team performed a detailed roofing condition assessment to determine where the existing membranes could be restored through advanced coating systems and where full replacement was necessary due to water intrusion, structural concerns, or material degradation.
For the roof restoration, we utilized a high-performance liquid-applied membrane system that extends the life of the existing roof while improving energy efficiency and water resistance. In the areas that required a full roof replacement, we implemented a complete tear-off, substrate repair, and installation of a new multi-layer roofing assembly designed to meet North Carolina building codes, school safety standards, and long-term durability requirements.
The project demanded careful construction phasing, as the school remained operational during much of the work. Our team coordinated closely with school administrators, facilities personnel, and contractors to ensure minimal disruption to student learning while maintaining strict safety protocols throughout the project.
Additionally, our firm provided construction administration services, reviewed submittals and product data, conducted regular site visits, and worked closely with local inspectors to ensure full compliance with all public school construction regulations.
This project highlights our firm’s deep experience in K-12 educational facility renovations, roofing system design, and public sector project management. The completed roof repair and replacement not only extend the building’s lifespan but also contribute to a safer, more energy-efficient learning environment for Asheville Middle School students and staff.
