Underground Fitness

144 Biltmore Ave Suite 002, Asheville, NC

Our architecture firm was tasked with transforming a former cabinetry workshop into Underground Fitness, a modern, high-energy gym located in an industrial setting. This adaptive reuse project presented a unique opportunity to celebrate the raw character of the existing structure while designing a contemporary fitness environment that supports intense physical training and community engagement.

The original space featured striking architectural elements, including a dramatic natural rock wall and massive exposed wooden columns—remnants of its previous life as a woodshop. Rather than concealing these elements, our design approach centered around highlighting the building’s original features, creating a bold visual identity that sets Underground Fitness apart from conventional gym environments.

The rock wall became the focal point of the space, accentuated through targeted lighting and minimal architectural intervention to preserve its rugged texture. The heavy timber columns were cleaned, refinished, and integrated into the open floor plan, acting as both structural components and spatial dividers that define workout zones without enclosing them.

To foster the high-intensity atmosphere the client envisioned, we utilized industrial-inspired finishes such as sealed concrete floors, matte black fixtures, and open ceilings with exposed ductwork. Acoustic treatments and durable materials were carefully chosen to withstand the demands of high-impact activity while maintaining a sleek, modern aesthetic.

Functional zoning was a key part of the design, with dedicated areas for cardio, strength training, and group classes, as well as flexible open space for circuit training. Custom lighting and sound systems enhance the immersive workout experience, while large entryways and glass partitions allow visibility and natural light to flow throughout the facility.

This project is a prime example of our expertise in adaptive reuse architecture, commercial interior renovation, and designing fitness spaces that merge function with architectural character. Underground Fitness now stands as a one-of-a-kind destination that energizes its users while honoring the history of the space.
