Blank Space AVL

701 Haywood Rd, Asheville, NC

Blank Space AVL is a vibrant adaptive reuse project that transforms an existing structure in Asheville, NC, into a flexible venue for creative events, performances, workshops, and exhibitions. The architectural vision preserves the building’s open, loft-style character while introducing strategic enhancements to maximize usability and atmosphere. Emphasizing versatility, the design supports a wide range of event configurations through an open floor plan, high ceilings, and modular spatial zones.

Material selections and design elements—such as exposed beams, polished concrete floors, and ample natural light—create a clean, industrial-modern aesthetic. Key functional upgrades include improved circulation, acoustics, and integrated audiovisual systems to support both intimate and large-scale gatherings. The space is grounded in its local context through thoughtful proportions and finishes that reflect Asheville’s creative culture and urban fabric.

Form & Function Architecture brought their interdisciplinary expertise and place-based approach to lead the project from concept to completion. Their understanding of code requirements, environmental factors, and community needs ensured a smooth design process that balanced form, function, and identity. The result is a dynamic and inviting venue that exemplifies how architecture can breathe new life into existing structures while serving evolving community needs.
