This 2,800-square-foot custom residence blends modern sustainability with a relaxed, earthy design sensibility that the client playfully described as “suburban-hippy.” Located in a scenic residential area outside Asheville, the home reflects a deep commitment to environmental responsibility, energy efficiency, and regionally inspired architecture.
Designed by our firm with both performance and aesthetics in mind, the house integrates a variety of high-efficiency systems and sustainable materials to create a beautiful, comfortable, and low-impact living environment. At the heart of the home is a geothermal heating and cooling system, which uses the earth’s stable temperature to provide year-round indoor climate control with minimal energy consumption.

The design incorporates passive solar strategies to maximize natural daylight and reduce heating loads in winter, while structural insulated panels (SIPs) and high-performance foam insulation ensure superior thermal performance and air sealing. Together, these systems significantly reduce the home’s energy demands, aligning with modern standards for green residential design.
Locally sourced and milled wood was used throughout the home for flooring, cabinetry, and architectural detailing—reinforcing the homeowner’s values of supporting local industry and minimizing embodied carbon. The interior spaces feel warm and natural, with handcrafted touches that contrast beautifully with the modern, clean-lined structure.

The home also features low-flow plumbing fixtures to conserve water without compromising performance, contributing to the overall resource-conscious footprint. Every decision—from materials to mechanical systems—was made through the lens of longevity, comfort, and environmental stewardship.
This project showcases our firm’s expertise in sustainable home design, energy-efficient residential architecture, and site-responsive planning. The result is a home that not only meets the lifestyle needs of its owners today but is also built for a resilient and eco-conscious future.
