Drawing inspiration from the rugged aesthetic of a rusty mining shed, this newly constructed home reimagines the historic industrial vernacular with modern materials, energy-efficient systems, and a commitment to sustainability.
Designed by Form & Function Architecture, the residence incorporates a wide range of high-performance building strategies aimed at reducing environmental impact and enhancing long-term comfort. At the heart of the mechanical system is a geothermal heating and cooling system, which uses the stable temperatures below the earth’s surface to regulate indoor climate efficiently, year-round.
The home also features passive solar design, including carefully placed windows and deep overhangs to optimize solar gain in winter while minimizing overheating during the summer months. High-performance spray foam insulation and structural insulated panels (SIPs) significantly improve the building envelope, reducing energy consumption and enhancing indoor air quality.
Additional sustainable features include low-flow water fixtures, which conserve water without compromising performance, and the extensive use of locally sourced and milled wood throughout the interior. This not only supports local craftsmanship but also reduces the carbon footprint associated with material transportation.
